Creativity keeps tradition alive

Rose is known for being the best high school in Pitt County. Not only for superior academics and athletics, but for the experience it provides.
Over the years, Rose has been the most trendsetting school around, starting with the annual Sadie Hawkins dance, to the growing presence of school spirit, to the creative SMART Block schedule. The past few years at Rose have shown impressive origininality and forward thinking from both the students, teachers and staff. However this year, we have noticed some of the original creativity fizzling out. While many of the new traditions have found a home at Rose, they have become stagnant in growth.
Take Sadie Hawkins for example. It seems as if there are only two ways for girls to ask guys anymore: write on his car or surprise him with food. Even the most creative ideas have been copy-catted so many times, they’re becoming textbook. Come on, girls. Think outside the box. This is only the third year this dance has gone on so there is no way that every possible way to ask a boy has been done. In a matter of years. If date proposals cease to be interesting, people are going to lose interest in the dance altogether.
It was awesome to have a Fall Formal dance this year. Incorporating a dance into Homecoming weekend was a fun and exciting addition. We love this innovation and hope it sticks around in the future to become a yearly tradition.
Next, let’s think about our school spirit. Remember the days when basketball games meant insane outfits, skits, cheers printed out on notecards? Each game was an event. There hasn’t been an original theme or cheer once this year. We aren’t bashing Rowdie Rampants, we just miss actually getting rowdy.
Keeping things fresh and creative makes school ten times more enjoyable and interesting. As a student body, we have unending opportunities to come up with ideas that could make our school even better. Whether it is asking someone to a dance in a crazy way or coming up with a goofy theme for a b-ball game, new and different ideas keep everybody interested and excited. We all need to remember how privileged we are to go to Rose, and how other schools look to us for ideas. Rose is united by our many orignal traditions. We hope that after we graduate, Rose students will continue to stay creative and honor our old traditions while keeping them alive with fresh ideas so that future students can experience how fun this school can actually be.
