Don't give the media ammunitionBY MARY SLADE DUKE AND MARIA PROKOPOWICZ ON APRIL 17, 2014
Rose has long been a point of controversy in the local media. Residents of eastern North Carolina turn on the television and see news involving Rose students, former Rose students and even faculty all the time. The media doesn’t always accurately portray our school, though. There are negative aspects of Rose but there are also things about Rose that make us the best high school in Greenville. Recently, our school has again been in the spotlight after an incident involving two Rose students made headlines. On Wednesday, April 9, two Rose juniors were involved in a drive-by “shooting” near the Conley campus.
Rose and Conley are constantly competing to be the best high school in the county. We feel confident when we say that Rose absolutely outshines in academics and is obviously a strong competitor with Conley’s athletics. Each sporting event between the schools brings up the rivalry and competition, and with this comes the trash talk. Usually Rose is referred to as the ghetto school and Conley as the red necks. These reputations are normal and expected, but as students and athletes who work hard everyday to help improve our school’s rep, it is extremely annoying when our classmates do something to boost our school’s negative stereotype. On Wednesday, we all knew Conley was having a lockdown drill due to buzz on social media. Then came the news of a shooting at Conley. Once everyone was sure nobody was hurt, I think most of us let out a little giggle. Haha, who is the ghetto school now? Still us. Rose students thought it would be funny to terrorize our rival school by shooting a gun in the air while driving by the campus. That would have been a hilarious prank, had it not been idiotic and illegal. Joke is on Rose now. Instead of boosting our school’s negative image, Rose should be making the news for positive things like high test scores and winning athletic teams. However, when our students act in ways that only tarnish our image and boost our “ghetto” reputation, what can we expect? HTML Comment Box is loading comments...
