9TH GRADE
Welcome, FreshiesBY JOSH GAY ON OCTOBER 18, 2013
As a freshman, there are many new responsibilities. Freshmen have new classes, a new environment to adjust to and even new friends, not to mention that freshmen get blamed for pretty much everything that goes wrong in the school. Freshmen all face the new high school atmosphere, the struggles of going from middle to high school and of course being referred to as “fresh meat.” Though this switch can be intimidating, freshman Jennifer Mata was eager to share her thoughts about being a part of the freshman pride.
Mata said it was exciting to be a part of the freshmen class and after a couple weeks of getting used to it, it was just like middle school. Mata said she misses SMART Block because she had time to do school work and is now struggling because she has to do what she can during lunch. As we all know when smart block was canceled everyone blamed the freshmen. Freshmen wonder why all students blame them for SMART Block and why they face the consequences of no SMART Block instead of just those who caused trouble. “That’s messed up,” Mata said. “[Because] not just freshmen destroyed smartblock, it was mostly the whole school and the people who were fighting.” Freshman Anna Jordan thinks that being a freshman is like being in any grade in high school. Jordan said she has not had any struggles with high school so far and all she has to do is stay organized. “Well, I went to a private middle school [St. Peters],” Jordan said. “It was a lot different [coming to Rose] but it wasn't hard to adjust.” Freshman Keshon Newton also agrees that it is a new experience going from middle to high school, and he is learning how to become more independent. Newton said that as of now he has not faced any problems with high school and hopes to not face any in the future. Newton disagrees with the whole school always blaming freshmen for everything. “The sophomores and juniors [are] always talking about the freshmen but of course they know more about the rules, they’ve been here longer,” Newton said. Newton said his transition to high school differed from other freshmen in Greenville because he moved from Texas where the rules were more strict. Freshman Griner Meeks said he was very nervous on the first day of school but eager to make new friends and start fresh. Griner is also upset about ending SMART Block and wants to have it back. “I feel shocked because I'm always making good decisions [during] smart block,” Meeks said. “I just don't see the reason why they took it down.” It seems as if freshmen are always taking the blame or getting pranked by older students. For example, there is a myth that some freshmen believe to be true. They have been told by older Rose students that there is a pool by art teacher Randall Leach’s room. They heard it is upstairs and has not been used since 2000. Freshmen, you are officially gullible. While at rose do not take anything for granted, be the best you can be. Meet new friends, make good grades, join clubs and most importantly have fun. HTML Comment Box is loading comments...
