Grease
Grease is the WordBY SOPHIE LEWIS ON FEBRUARY 21, 2014
Grease Lightning has struck Rose. The cast list was posted and practice is under way for one of the most beloved plays.
“[Grease] is something the kids have wanted to do for a long time,” drama teacher and director Monica Edwards said. The entire cast is excited to perform and show that they are better than normal high school actors. “I want [everyone] to think that it was more than an amiture highschool production,” senior Preston Bradsher said. Bradsher will be the star of the April show as she portrays Sandy Dumbrowski. Sandy is a small town girl who moves into the neighborhood. This is the event that starts all the drama in the play. “I was happy about it,” Bradsher said. “That’s what I wanted so it worked out I guess.” Though being in a play could be nerve racking for some, only one thing seems to intimidate the man behind the character of Danny Zuko. Those who have seen the movie, Grease, know that the man to originally play Danny Zuko, John Travolta, could hit the high notes. This is the part of the show that makes Cannon anxious. “I’m kind of nervous though, because Danny is a Tenor [higher male voice] and I’m a Baraton [lower male voice] so that should be interesting,” senior Charlie Cannon said. Though Cannon may be nervous about matching pitch he is still excited to play Zuko. Unfortunately not everyone is so excited about their role. “At first I was a little confused and kind of disappointed,” senior Rael Thigpen said. “I mean at first I wanted Danny.” Some of the cast seem to be disappointed because they feel they are capable of more. “Well I really wanted Rizzo,” sophomore Amanda Scanlan said. The reaction to this from the director is very understanding. “I have been there; I understand their pain,” Edwards said. “And yet the only way they should be disapointed is if they drop out.” There is an upside to both cast members disappointment however. “I found out I had this huge five minute solo,” Thigpen said. “So I was like, heck ya; I like it now.” Thigpen will be enjoying his solo as the Teen Angel in the play. When Rydell High’s resident ne’er-do-well, Frenchy, doesn’t know what to do she is inspired by her own guardian angel. “I am so excited because this is the first time I will ever have a solo in a musical,” Scanlan said. Grease is a musical that incorporates not only songs, but also diverse characters. “The greasers in general are really fun to portray; the accents are fun to do,” Cannon said. Most people are excited about solos, costumes and the voices, but the part the part everyone is excited for are the songs. “The songs are really high energy and I know the whole cast is going to have an amazing time performing,” Bradsher said. Edward is also excited for the upcoming play. “I want people to walk out thinking, well that was an interesting way to do it,” Edwards said. The cast is prepped and ready for action as they preparing not only the songs and lines but also getting across the message they want to illustrate. “I want [everyone] to think, [dang] that boy is good looking,” Cannon said.
