Dress up
Costumes galore for this HalloweenBY CAMERON TEANEY ON NOVEMBER 15, 2013
It is that time of year again. Jack-o’-lanterns are carved, mass amounts of candy are bought and the search for the perfect costume begins. On October 31st, many students ushered in Halloween by taking on the appearance of anything ranging from Disney princesses to pumpkin spice lattes. Students were allowed to come to school wearing their Halloween costumes as a part of Spirit Week and some also dressed up that night to celebrate.
Several students designed their costumes with a group of friends. For some groups, the task of deciding on a costume that everyone liked seemed to be more difficult than actually creating the costume. “We struggled to find a group costume that everybody wanted to wear, and then we came up with the idea to be emojis and we all liked it,” junior Marisa Cue said. “We got T-shirts from Michaels and got felt, cut it out [in the shapes of different emojis] and glued it on; it probably only took 30 minutes.” Cue and her friends dressed up Halloween night as well, but planned different costumes for the evening festivities. “We all wore something different at night,” Cue said. “I was Daisy Buchanan from the Great Gatsby and wore one of those flapper girl dresses.” Freshmen Lily Huo, Caroline Doherty and Zara Mehta also dressed up together, but unlike Cue and her friends, these girls did not plan their costumes as far in advance. “This was kind of a spur of the moment thing,” Doherty said. “We were trying to come up with an idea for the three of us and I had the idea to search ‘the three’ in google search and the three blind mice and the three little pigs were the most popular searches; so it was either being blind the whole day or being pigs so we decided to go with pigs.” The girls also wore their pig outfits Halloween night and all got together to watch scary movies and eat candy. Mehta said that dressing up for Halloween is somewhat of a tradition. “I think every year I have [dressed up] for Halloween,” Mehta said. “I know I’ve been a cat for 7 years in a row; [My favorite costume was when] I was a construction worker and I carried a tool box as my candy bag.” Not everyone shares this tradition. Until this year, senior Collin Moore had not dressed up for Halloween since he was in middle school. However, this year Moore thought it would be fun to dress up again, this time as Buddy the Elf. “I was going to a costume party and needed a costume so I googled Buddy the Elf costume and all the reviews were bad so my mom made it for me,” Moore said. “[It took] a whole weekend.” Some students simply wanted their costume to honor their favorite character, singer, actor or role model. “I love Nicki Minaj; I love how she dresses, her wig, her music so I decided to be her,” freshman Rashunori Moye said. “I already had my bustier and the shirt, pants and shoes, so I just had to get the pink wig from Walmart and put it up there and [put on] the lipstick.” Football players, bananas, hippies and Flo from the Progressive commercials name just a few more of the many costumes and characters that graced the halls of Rose and the streets of Greenville this Halloween.
