Music: a real life time machine
BY MERRITT ANDERSON ON DECEMBER 18, 2014
It is crazy how a song can consume you. The second it comes on, it has the ability to transport you to an entire different place and time. We attach memories with songs. They are little reminders of all of the different experiences and times in our lives. Music is one of the most beautiful gifts we are given here on earth.
It’s the holiday season, and that means it is time for Christmas music galore. Whether it be “Jingle Bells” or “O Holy Night,” each Christmas tune has a special feeling tied to it. Christmas time is a time that brings back the innocence of being a child. You remember being so excited for Santa to come as you layed wide awake trying to listen for the hooves of reindeer on the roof. You remember decorating cookies with your grandma and decorating the Christmas tree making sure that your favorite ornament is hung at the top. Christmas music is magical in itself. Then there’s that song from two summers ago. You hear it and all you can think about are all of the crazy fun times you had with all of your friends. Some have gone to college, some you have lost over time, but that one little song brings back all of the memories you shared with them. Memories of being on the boat, hitting big waves and almost flying out, laughing at how funny you all look hovering in a squat position so you don’t hurt your butt. And the memories of driving down the road at night with all of the windows rolled down, screaming the lyrics at the top of your lungs, feeling the warm air in your face. Every time you hear it now, you’re right back with your friends, enjoying being dumb, young and living with no responsibilities. There are also the songs that you still struggle to listen to. The songs that remind you of some of the hardest times in your life. It comes on and you don’t want to remember what you have attached with it, or it comes on and you listen to it and appreciate how you’ve grown. Music is special. It highlights all kinds of different times in our lives. It reminds us of our past. It reminds of the happiest and hardest things we have ever experienced. Music has a special way of finding its way into our hearts and staying there forever. |
