6 Week Exams
New Tests for a New YearBY RYLAN PUCKETT ON NOVEMBER 15, 2013
The upperclassmen and sophomores have to take tests like the PSAT, the PLAN test, the ACT and the SAT. Don’t get me wrong, I am very grateful that freshmen do not have to take those tests. However, freshman have to deal with a new kind of test that we have not seen before. In middle school all we had were benchmarks, which did not count towards or against our averages. Now we have six week exams, which have the power to raise or lower averages right at the end of the six weeks. For example, my average before my science six week exam was a 94, and following the exam, my average dropped to an 87. Which pretty much sucks because I thought i was going to get an A in that class. I assume that most of the upperclassmen are pretty much used to the six weeks exams. On the other hand, most of the freshmen are not. I think the six week exams are pretty pointless. Instead of six week exams I think teachers should just have six week reviews, and have the class state the chapters they have trouble on. For example, instead of your math teacher taking up the day with testing she could ask the class what they need help on and spend the day on that. One of the teachers I’ve talked to said that tests in general are pretty pointless because tests do not measure knowledge. Most of the freshmen including myself think that the tests are unnecessary.. Most teachers give six week exams, but for the teachers who don’t: thank you.
