Pinterest giftBY EMILY HARVEY ON DECEMBER 19, 2013
While the towels you bought mom a year ago are pushed back on the rack, the plate you half painted, half scribbled on when you were five is not just hung on the wall of the kitchen, but hung where everyone can see it. Moms obviously like thoughtful, handmade gifts but the nice gesture is also appealing to everyone especially around the holidays. Plus, finding gifts for relatives, friends, teachers and neighbors can not only be hard to find but expensive.
My problem begins when I want to make something cute and save a little cash but have no idea what I could make that wouldn’t be totally juvenile. Pinterest is not just a site to help you dream up your fake wedding or something to explore when you have nothing better to do, but a world of novel ideas for men and women, the Holidays and summer, your kids and your house. I turned to it to help me figure out what crafty gift I could not only afford to make but be able to make. I chose a peppermint sugar scrub that not only has a mere four ingredients, consists of mostly household items and is so easy I had barely any trouble but smells delicious and works wonders on your feet, hands and legs. The only item I had to purchase was peppermint oil which can be found at any grocery store or health shop for two or three bucks. I mixed one and a half cups of sugar, a little more than a half cup of canola oil and about 15 drops of peppermint oil (I ended up repeating this in order to make double). I dyed half of my mixture red with food coloring but left the other half sugary white. The directions called for olive oil but that would have caused the white to be a yellow color and canola oil worked perfectly fine. I then dug up several mason jars from cabinets in my house and attempted to alternate putting red as the first layer and white as the next in order to create a candy cane striping effect. This worked for two of my three jars but the third seemed to have the red sinking down and dying all the white stripes so I went ahead and mixed that one and it looks great as just a red scrub. This Pinterest find was easy to make, affordable, thoughtful and perfect to gift for your sisters, girlfriends, moms, female teachers and aunts. If you wait until the last minute to start your holiday shopping do not worry, just return to either paragraph five or search holiday gifts on Pinterest, more specifically, peppermint sugar scrub.
