The holidays are a time to celebrate. A time to relax with friends and family. A time to make memories that will last a lifetime. A time to bond over delicious meals and treats.
Pinterest allows one to find unique and delicious recipes to make for almost any occasion. As I hunted for holiday desserts that I thought would be enjoyable for this winter, I came across two that I had to create: Candy Cane Cake and Holiday Cake Balls. I began my cooking adventure with the holiday balls. The recipe started off simple, with the directions telling me to prepare cakes just as the box says. Then, adding the correct amount of icing was the tricky part. The recipe calls for an entire container, so abiding by the directions I graciously added it all. I quickly learned that all of the icing was way too much. So, by the time I got to the second batch, I knew not to add it all. Although the vanilla was a little more sticky than the chocolate, I ended up able to form both flavors of the cake into balls. The last step to making these was coating them with the chocolate bark, which is the best part! Once I got to the Candy Cane Cake, the long list of ingredients was a shock after only needing two to make the cake balls. It is definitely more of a complex recipe. I had to bring the Kitchenaid out to help me blend all of the interesting ingredients, including the red food dye and distilled vinegar. Not realizing that I needed more than two full bottles of red food dye for the “made-from-scratch,” red velvet cake, it did not get all of it that the recipe called for. Hoping that this would just result in a light pink, once the cake batter was blended together, it came out to be a darkish purple. So, TIP: add all of the food dye that the cake calls for. Also, the recipe calls for crushed candy canes as a coating on top of the cake. I learned this morning that you also need to wait until serving the cake to add this decoration. The candy canes started dripping down the cake, giving the outer layer a red dye down the sides. These two recipes turned out to be semi-successful. When I go back to try them again, I will know what to do again and what to change. HTML Comment Box is loading comments...
