Opportunities

Fifty-five clubs, twenty-six Advanced Placement (AP) classes and thirty-two sports teams make Rose a school filled with opportunities for students to get involved. Some students take advantage of these opportunities, while others may take them for granted. Junior Rice Van Coutren decided to take advantage of the opportunity to join the diving team that was started at Rose this year. “This year [Rose] started the diving team and that’s the first sport I've been able to do at school,” Van Coutren said. “None of the other schools in Pitt County have diving teams.” Rose offers many activities and programs, such as the diving team, that are not offered at other schools. Smart Block is one of the features that students believe best separates Rose from the other schools in Pitt County. “Smart Block has been my savior this year,” junior Rebecca Floyd said. Floyd likes being a student at the only school in Pitt County to offer Smart Block. Floyd appreciates and has used her extra time in Smart Block to complete homework, study for tests and practice for orchestra. As a member in the orchestra, she is also appreciative of the big music program at Rose. “Rose has a big Orchestra program and this year we have a new teacher who is a professional,” Floyd said. “Unlike other schools in the county, we get to play [our instruments] at Fletcher and ECU.” Signing up for AP classes, joining clubs and playing on sports teams are ways that students can take advantage of the wide variety of opportunities at Rose. “There are a lot of different clubs and activities that you can get involved with,” social studies teacher Steven Hill said. “If you’re a student who's not very athletic and likes intellectual things, you can do chess club; there’s also indoor and outdoor track as well as cross country for those who like athletics.” Newsweek magazine recently published their list of the best 2,000 public high schools in the United States for 2013. The schools on this list are considered the most effective in preparing their graduates for college. Rose made the list, while other schools in Pitt County did not. Many students believe that Rose is the best high school in the county for various reasons. However, according to the facts, Rose in fact is the best high school for academics and extracurricular activities. |
