SINGING TELEGRAMS
Singing their way into your heartBY JOSHUA GAY ON FEBRUARY 21, 2014
Roses are red, violets are blue, singles awareness day is coming up and of course valentines day is coming up too!! Valentines day is that time of year when our thoughts turn to sweethearts; it is the day of love; a day for the exchange of tokens of affection and, of course, a day where you show your loved one how much you really care for them (even though you should show that everyday). Every year since 2000 it has been an annual tradition around valentines day to have what we call "singing telegrams". When one thinks of singing telegrams they must think of chorus teacher, Karen Meetze, who not only was there from the beginning, but is also the founder of singing telegrams.
Singing telegrams, which are now a tradition for Rose students, started about 14 years ago. It started out as a fundraiser for the chorus so that they could perform and pay for the chorus festivals. When singing telegrams first got started, they sold them for two dollars a song. Students pick popular songs that are currently on the radio and also some old favorites as well. “We pick the songs and the students learn how to sing the songs acapella,” Meetze said. “Then for two dollars the students would then order a song to be delivered to a [friend, loved one or a person they care about].” The chorus usually sells about 125 telegrams, and that is their full profit due to the fact it doesn't cost anything to make them. If you want to be the one that’s actually singing ,and not the one that’s being sung to, join the chorus. Preferably in the spring though, because that’s when the infamous singing telegrams go out. Speaking of singing for the chorus, I’m sure a lot of us wonder what it is like to be on the other side looking in. To be the singer and not the one that is actually being sung to. Junior Sasha Harris, who has been singing in chorus for four years now, has some experience on that subject. Seeing as Harris has been in chorus for four years and singing telegrams for two, she says that performing in front of her peers is not a big deal to her and that she does not get stage fright while doing it. Harris even said that if anything it’s fun performing and singing. “I like all the songs,” Harris said. “Plus we get to get out of class”. Harris used to sing in a gospel group and now currently sings for her church, and will sing whenever anybody needs her to sing. Singing telegrams is a phenomenon here at Rose, and is a day a lot of people will cherish, maybe even for the rest in their lives. Now in closing, for all those that have gotten a singing telegram, congratulations you got a crush! Maybe it was from your girlfriend or boyfriend, maybe it was from your friend.
