STAR WARS EPISODE VII
BY NED COFFMAN DECEMBER 28TH 2014
A stormtrooper stands up in the middle of the desert. An astromech droid races excitedly across an open airstrip. A squadron of stormtroopers load their guns and wait for the drop-craft door to open. A beautiful girl drives her hover bike off into the horizon. Several Rebel X-Wing fighters soar across a monstrous body of water. A shadowy dark being walking in the woods activates a three sided lightsaber. The Millenium Falcon ascends into the air pursued by two Imperial TIE fighters. All behind the voice of an ominous narrator. These were the only scenes released in the new “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” trailer which was released Friday, November 29.
Continuing from where “Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi” left off, “The Force Awakens” takes place 30 years after the explosion of the second Death Star and the death of Darth Vader. The first movie in a third trilogy, “The Force Awakens,” which is to be directed by J.J. Abrams, was announced in Jan. 2013 after the Walt Disney Company acquired Lucasfilm in 2012. The film will see the return of the cast from the original trilogy along with several new actors, including Daisy Ridley and John Boyega who will play the main characters in the new trilogy.
Despite the fact that plot details about “The Force Awakens” have not yet been disclosed, potential spoilers have spread across the Internet as to the film’s plot. Here is a compilation of potential plot details for “The Force Awakens.” Reminder, these are all speculations:
The film is said to open with the ending of “Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back” when Darth Vader cuts Luke’s hand off and reveals to him that he is his father. The film then cuts 30 years later into the future after the events of “Return of the Jedi” where Boyega’s character is shot down over a desert planet. There, he is found by Ridley’s character who befriends him and nurses him back to health. The two later find Luke’s first lightsaber which they take to an old cyborg character played by Max von Sydow who tells them that it belonged to Luke. They then join up with an elderly Han Solo and Chewbacca to go find Luke, who is revealed to have disappeared after the events of “Return of the Jedi”.
In their journey to find Luke, the heroes are not only pursued by the remnants of the Galactic Empire, but by the newly introduced Inquisitors as well. Originating from the new 3D CGI animated series “Star Wars: Rebels,” the Inquisitors are lightsaber equipped individuals who reputedly helped Darth Vader hunt down and kill the remaining Jedi Knights in the aftermath of “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.” Recently cast actors Adam Driver and Gwendoline Christie have both been speculated to play Inquisitor characters.
If these spoilers prove to be true, then I can’t wait to see “The Force Awakens” in theaters next Dec. From what I’ve heard and read on the Internet, this film will definitely redeem the Star Wars saga after being ruined by comic relief Gungans and boring political scenes that comprised the prequel trilogy. As for the sequel trilogy, I have no worries and strongly believe that it will return us to the galaxy far far away that we’ve been waiting to see again for 32 years.
