WINTER TRACK
Winter Track Starts Working OutBY SAM SNEED OCT. 29, 2014
Most people do not know much about indoor track at Rose. Participants do not do not run inside like the name suggests. The name comes from the fact that winter track is mainly played inside, but Rose does not have an indoor track, so the team just runs outside. Indoor track does not have its first meet until Dec 3, however they are still having practices every day after school.
“I’m a captain this year, so I am making the workouts more intense so that we do not slack off,” senior Hayley Goldman said. Sophomore Nyshiem Canty said the team lost many of its key runners from last year, but they still expect to have a good year. The team is made up of many different athletes, as they have distance runners, sprinters and people who do field events. However, winter track does not have all of the events that spring track has. Some of the events that spring track offers that are not included in winter track are the 800 meter run, 2 mile and high jump. “I run the 1200 meter run in winter mainly because they do not have the 800, which is what I usually run,” Canty said. The winter track team does not have as many students who are willing to run because of how cold it gets during some of the meets. Many of the students who run on the winter track team also run during the spring and do this as a way to stay in shape for the other season. Coach Dennis Gibbs is and has been the coach of both the winter and spring track teams for more than five years. “I had been playing soccer since I was little, and I never thought about running track until Coach Gibbs told me to run,” Goldman said. “I’m really happy I started.” Goldman said that even though Rose lost many good runners last year, they still plan on having a good season and competing well against the other team in their conference. “I just started running cross country my freshman year to do something new,” Canty said. “So then I started track and I love it.” The track team has started workouts and starts the season with their first practice on November 1st. The team is not very large so they do not mind new people coming out to run. The team still has many openings left for people to tryout. |
