Working hard to finish hardBY JUSTYN QUEIROZ ON JANUARY 30, 2014
After beating North Pitt and Washington and having a disappointing loss to South Central, the girls Varsity basketball team finished the Christmas tournament on good terms. They now take this finish to get ready for the rest of the conference season.
“Now that we know our competition and what they bring to the table, we know how to adjust,” sophomore Jillian Ebron said. “So now during practices, we are making those adjustments so we can beat those teams that we have lost to.” Ebron is one of two captains on the team, averaging 14.3 points per game and 4.5 assists. She has shown leadership and has been an example to her team by working hard. “I have been working really hard so that I may get better,” Ebron said. “Not only that I may get better, but also to help my teammates so they improve and work hard.” Ebron is preparing herself to take on the rest of the season strong. According to Ebron, she has the ambition to continue to work hard so she can do well during the season. “Right now I am working on everything that I am not doing so well now,” Ebron said. “So that way I can improve on those things and hopefully make a difference against the other teams in the conference.” The team is working in practices to improve individually and to play better as a team. They work on the fundamentals that they need to adjust to be able to beat teams like South Central. “[The tournament] went well, but I feel like if could have gone better,” junior Takia Thigpen said. “We need to work on not giving up the ball so much; we have too many turnovers.” The team has been changing their practice routine, and the girls are preparing to finish their season strong. They hope for a winning season and a place in the playoffs. “We are doing a lot better than what was expected of us so a seating in playoffs would be great,” sophomore Walker Allen said. “We need to work on our chemistry because that is always good, and it will help us accomplish the goal we have set for ourselves.” In order to accomplish those objectives, the girls are working harder than ever to prepare themselves. They are pushing each other to work harder. Senior captain Kamaih Gilbert is working on the teams unity. “I’m working hard, and I’m trying to work with my team so we are all on the same level of intensity,” Gilbert said. “If we continue the intensity, I believe that we can have a great record and have a seat in playoffs.” Some of the girls on the team are practicing hard on their basketball skills, but they are also working on their attitude. Thigpen is one of those girls who is working on her attitude. “I get a bit upset when things don’t go as I plan or when things don’t go well for the team,” Thigpen said. “So I’m trying to improve my attitude because when I get like that, it does not benefit the team.” The team is working hard to achieve these goals, and with hard work and dedication, all things are possible. They train hard to make each other better and are ready to take the rest of the season head on. HTML Comment Box is loading comments...
