SMART Block Basketball
You ballin today?BY Cooper Dave Kunkel V
Ballin’ today? This is a question frequently asked throughout Rose on days that operate on SMART block. This extra hour is not only used for studying but also for relieving stress through physical activities. Students use SMART Block as an opportunity to play basketball and break away from the constant pressure of school.
“With school stressing me out all the time, it’s straight to finally have something to get my mind off of homework and stuff,” junior Timothy Malik Suggs said. Not only is it used for relieving stress, but also for improving on skills and having a good time. Junior Darius Mayo (Sosa) said SMART Block basketball often gets very competitive. With five on five, full court or half court games being played, it can get serious. “Man, people talk more trash in SMART block than any other time, but to me they’re all just scrubs, not on the level I’m at,” Mayo said. Like most open gyms around Greenville, there are the regulars: the people who ball both SMART blocks everyday. “Aye you ballin both blocks bruh or just one?“ This is a question that senior Alex Melton hears daily. Although Melton tries to spend his free time in classes studying, he often finds himself in the gym playing basketball either one or both blocks every day. “I mean what can I say, ball is life,” Melton said. “It’s hard to pass up the opportunity of cashin’ out on my boy Malik.” Suggs said that even though things get heated between the ballers, it is still just something fun to do with friends during school. Most students have their own opinion on who is the best during SMART Block. “I’m the best man; can’t nobody guard me,” junior Jair Phillips said. “I probably score like 40 points a block.” Although basketball can boost your reputation it can also hurt it. “Very few SMART Block ballers will admit to getting crossed up or balled on,” Melton said. “Either because they didn’t, or because they have too much pride.” Everyone has a reputation to uphold during SMART Block basketball. Someone’s reputation can be hurt if they get "crossed up" or "balled on.” “Nah I don’t get balled on; I’m too nice for that,” Suggs said. With many admitting they are the best, and few admitting when they get balled on, these ballers struggle to agree on almost anything. Except the fact that they all like to play against the kids on the basketball team, and try to beat them every chance they get. “It doesn’t matter if it’s Jair, Marquise or someone else,” Mayo said. “I never get tired of taking them to school.” This is an opportunity for everyone to play basketball, regardless of their size or athleticism. SMART Block does more than improve grades, it improves lives. Ballin’ today? This is a question frequently asked throughout Rose on days that operate on SMART block.
