AP Students tackle current eventsBY MACIE WRIGHT ON FEBRUARY 21, 2014
Social Studies teacher Elizabeth Knight’s AP Comparative Government students have been assigned an exciting foreign currents events project. The students are required to research the current events of a foreign country that they chose. Students are being encouraged to embrace their creative and humorous side to make their project more exciting. The class is focused on the study of the governments of six foreign countries: Russia, Great Britain, Iran, Nigeria, China and Mexico. Each group chose a country and is required to make a video, design a portfolio, provide food from their country and create a review game for the class. The project is designed to be both informational and fun.
“I think it makes it more interesting than simply looking up current events, bringing it in [and] reporting it,” Knight said. Students in the class are excited about this project because of the various tasks they have been assigned. According to students, they are most excited about the food and the video. “I think by making the video, it allows people to work in groups and have fun and use their creativity and learn what they need to learn at the same time,” Knight said. The current events in these six countries range from the Royal Christening to the Winter Olympics. Many people are looking forward to the project on Russia. “I find anything about Vladimir Putin fascinating,” senior Kelly Lowery said. Russia is getting a lot of exposure right now because of the Olympics and the various terrorist attacks. “I think Russia should be very interesting because with the Olympics going on,” Knight said. A few of the countries, such as Nigeria, are not in the news often so most of the students have not had much exposure to the events taking place there. “Nigeria is normally very interesting too because there is so much ... going on there but we don’t hear a whole lot about it in America’s news, so normally the students are kind of shocked by what they learn,” Knight said. This project will not only allow students to have fun but also inform them on the various events taking place outside of our country. The students in the class are looking forward to having a project that is both engaging and enjoyable. Knight also enjoyed this type of project when she was in high school. “I remember it being very fun to work with students to film it and to edit it and that it was one of the more enjoyable projects probably because I enjoyed it,” Knight said. The foreign current events project is an opportunity for students to be creative and gain new information about the events taking place around the world. HTML Comment Box is loading comments...
