Twasn't the Night Before ChristmasBY EMMIE BARNHILL ON DECEMBER 11, 2014
The author of one of the most well known poems ever written never intended for the work to be published. “‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.” According to The FW, over 200 years ago, a man named Clement Clarke Moore wrote those famous words for his family. HanukkahBY ELIZABETH WILLIAMS ON DECEMBER 18, 2014
Hanukkah, alternatively spelled Chanukah, is a holiday that celebrates light over darkness. Elf on the ShelfBY CONOR FOGARTY ON DECEMBER 18, 2014
The holidays are a time of joy and memories, and holiday traditions are one of the reasons why it is such a memorable time. There have been countless holiday traditions throughout history, and these traditions are ever changing. One tradition that is fairly new is the Elf on the Shelf. This tradition is similar to many traditions of the past because it is interactive and involves the entire family. What Happens to Christmas Trees After the HolidaysBY SARA YOUNG DECEMBER 18, 2014
Before the Thanksgiving turkey is even digested, thoughts quickly shift from Thanksgiving to Christmas. A tradition for many families is purchasing and decorating a live Christmas tree. However, once the holiday is over and it's time to pack up all the decorations, what happens to the 31 million trees that are hauled out to the curb? The Significance of Holiday CandlesBY MACIE WRIGHT DECEMBER 19 2014
Twinkle here, twinkle there; around the holiday season there is twinkle everywhere. The bright lights that surround many communities during the month of December are not only for decoration, but have a significant meaning. The lights used for decoration have different meanings depending on a person’s beliefs and motives. From a Christian perspective, the lights are meant to serve as reminders of Jesus, the Light of the World, hope, happiness and safety. Holiday Gift GivingBY HALLIE MILLS ON DECEMBER 19, 2014
Wrapped in colorful paper and tied with a bow, gifts are a common sight each December. Whether a person participates in Christmas, Kwanzaa or Hanukkah, he or she will most likely receive a gift or give one to someone else. Some non-religious people give gifts each December just because it is “the thing to do.” How did the tradition of giving gifts start? What does it symbolize? Why do we give gifts each December? Many of the people who participate in this tradition do not even know the answer to these questions. CampusBY SCARLET ANTHONY ON NOVEMBER 25, 2014
The original Rose campus was much different than the campus we have today. Greenville High School began downtown on 5th Street and then relocated to what is now Eppes Middle School. The athletic facilities at these two locations were not adequate for the school’s 4-A athletic potential. There were no baseball or football fields, so the games had to be held at Guy Smith and Ficklen Stadium. As Rose progressed on Arlington, improvements were needed in order for Rose to live up to its potential. Athletics Throughout the YearsBY KEELY GAY AND ELIZABETH WILLIAMS NOVEMBER 25 2014
Athletics at Rose have changed in many ways throughout the years. Some sports that Rose had in the 1980s are not offered anymore, while other new sports have been introduced to Rose. Junius Harris Rose ProfileBY MACIE WRIGHT ON NOVEMBER 25, 2014
Junius H. Rose High School is the place where students will spend four years of their life working hard and making memories, but who is Junius H. Rose, the man behind the school? Junius Harris Rose was born in 1892 and attended Trinity College, currently known as Duke University, for his undergraduate studies. After graduating from college, Rose became a principal in Kinston until 1915. After he left Kinston, he went on to be a principal in Bethel until 1917. From school dances to Key Club and SGA, the Rose social scene has developed over the years with the attending population of students. In the days approaching Halloween, televisions are filled with Halloween movies of all kinds. Whether it be a funny Disney movie, a silly cartoon or a scary horror movie, Halloween movies can provide students with a needed smile or scare. Art SchoolsBY SCARLETT ANTHONY ON OCTOBER 31, 2014
Students make their college choice based on a variety of reasons. For a few students at Rose, the college’s art program is the deciding factor. Halloween Treats and SweetsBY MACIE WRIGHT ON OCTOBER 31, 2014
Trick or treating, candy, pumpkins and costumes all come to mind when I hear the word Halloween. I have never been one to get really into the spirit of Halloween, but this year I decided to take a different approach to the October holiday. I have always loved themed events, where people go all out with everything from head to toe in one theme, so this year I decided I would try to bring the Halloween theme to my kitchen. History of HalloweenBY SARA YOUNG ON OCTOBER 31, 2O14
On Oct. 31, one of the most anticipated nights of the year, ghosts, goblins and ghouls line the streets chanting “trick-or-treat.” Halloween is a holiday many have been participating in ever since they can remember. However, many have no idea how this holiday came to be. Halloween Around the WorldBY ELIZABETH WILLIAMS ON OCTOBER 31, 2014
Oct. 31 may be called Harvest Tide, Festival of Dionysus, Halloween, All Hallows Eve or even Samhain, but this day is not a global holiday. Scream ParksBY SOFI VAN COUTREN ON OCTOBER 31, 2014

It’s that time of the year again. The pumpkin spice lattes have come out at Starbucks and the leaves are changing. It’s October, and the search has begun. Whether you are a last minute pumpkin shopper or you started searching a month ago, everyone knows that Halloween means pumpkins. Greenville has many places to go search the aisles for that one pumpkin that catches your eye. Haunted HousesBY EMMIE BARNHILL ON OCTOBER 31, 2014

Ever since his exposure to film and acting in eighth grade, senior Alex Munn desired to follow in his father’s footsteps and pursue his passion for film making. While this seems to be a fairly common career, Munn explains that it is actually one of the toughest occupations to get if a person does not have a famous reputation or is not related to a celebrity. Charlie GoodmanBY SARA YOUNG ON OCTOBER 10, 2014
Rose has a variety of exciting and diverse clubs which many students participate in. A robotics team is one of the many things Rose has to offer. Caroline DohertyBY HALLIE MILLS ON OCTOBER 10, 2014
At just a few weeks old, sophomore Caroline Doherty heard her first notes of classical music. Doherty has since then become a very talented harpist. As a newborn, Doherty’s parents played classical music for her, which she believes is how she first got involved with this art. At a young age, her mother urged her to pick an instrument to play because music helps with brain development. She chose the harp and started playing at eight years old. Wake up for MakeupBY HALLIE MILLS ON OCTOBER 10, 2014
Maybe she is born with it. Or maybe she sets the alarm clock early each morning to have time to work in front of the mirror. Hair, makeup and skincare are different types of cosmetology. There are many people at Rose who have the qualities of a cosmetologist. Guys and girls alike want to look their best when going out for a fun night, but some people strive to look their best for just a normal day at school. Sophomore Maddie Brown is one of the girls that works in front of the mirror each morning. The branch of cosmetology that she practices is makeup. Brown started wearing makeup in the fourth grade and since then has done makeup for friends and family members for special occasions. Maggie DiCesareBY ELIZABETH WILLIAMS ON OCTOBER 10, 2014

Books, papers, pens and pencils are common items in the backpacks of students, but there are also other things that are quickly stuffed into backpacks each morning. The chewing gum, lipstick, hair brushes, wallets, lunch bags and random items are some of the things in a backpack that hint at a person’s personality. North Face, Patagonia, Jansport and L.L. Bean are backpack brands frequently seen in the halls at Rose. Everyone has a favorite backpack type; however, it is the things inside the backpack that really matter. Most people are familiar with displaying one’s personality through fashion, but not everyone knows that when taking a peek in a backpack, you take a peek at the owner’s personality also.
