“Public school has given me many opportunities, helped me form new friendships, break out of my shyness, and gain new memories. "
SARAH BAILEY December 18, 2014
Dear Editor, Going to a public school for high school has been mainly a positive experience. I went to a private school for K-8, so I was a bit nervous about starting high school in a big public school. However, it has provided many opportunities I would not have had at a small private school. In my freshman year I was overwhelmed with different clubs, sports, and classes. Over time I have stuck with the ones that matter the most to me and provide me with the best experiences. There are so many clubs one can chose from, and I am thankful for all the time teachers and students put in to make these clubs happen. Being in clubs has helped me gain new friendships and memories. Sports and classes also offer so many valuable experiences. Smaller schools typically do not offer classes such as interior design, culinary arts, marine science, ceramics, or automotive mechanics. I haven’t taken all these classes, but the ones I have taken opened my eyes to new subjects and even careers. The variety of classes allows everyone to find something they enjoy or learn about a new field. Not only were my options in sports, clubs, and classes changed, learning how to adjust to a completely new atmosphere was another experience. Although I like Rose, I will say I definitely miss the close-knit, Christian environment of St. Peter’s. However, being in public school provides me with real world experience. It has shown me not everyone has similar views, and that everyone has a very different story. Being in classes with a mix of people has taught me how to better work in groups and discuss an opinion. I have also learned to be more grateful for all my blessings. The majority of my experiences have been positive so far. Public school has given me many opportunities, helped me form new friendships, break out of my shyness, and gain new memories. Sincerely, Sarah Bailey |
