Dick's vs. Dunham's
Dick's vs. Dunham'sBY REID PERKINS ON FEBRUARY 21, 2014
Dick’s Sporting Goods: the sporting superstore that nearly every person in this town was dying to see arrive. For years, rumors floated around as to when and if it would show up in Greenville. And then one day it came. It was a sign that our little town was not so little anymore. No longer would one have to drive over an hour to the “big city” to shop for all their sporting good needs. When Dick’s came to Greenville, it immediately became a hub of activity. Everyone from the fisherman to the MMA fighter was shopping at Dick’s and it seemed to be the new big attraction of our town.
But recently there has been a new kid on the block. Dunham’s Sports, another chain of sporting goods superstores, has recently come to Greenville. Seemingly out of nowhere and in no time at all Dunham’s set up shop in the old Halloween Express connected to the mall. Now, Dick’s may have a little competition to be worried about. And where there is competition, there must be a winner. So now this begs the question, which is the better Sporting Superstore? One of the keys to owning a successful business is location, location, location. And in this category, Dunham’s takes the win. Dunham’s is located in the building next to the mall food court on Arlington Blvd and connects to the mall itself. It is almost in the middle of town, and is extremely close to places where many of our students live. It’s right up the road from the neighborhoods and apartment complexes around Rose where many of our students are from, and it also borders several other neighborhoods in the Rose district. Dick’s, on the other hand, is located on the edge of town and to get there can take 15 minutes or more depending on traffic. A quick trip to Dick’s simply doesn’t happen, but with Dunham’s so close it’s easy to just drop in, buy something and be home in no time at all. Now once one has arrived at the store it’s time to go inside. And inside is where Dick’s has the upper hand. With it’s towering columns, huge posters of sports and athletes, organized setup, and high ceilings, Dick’s has the feel of a high end athletic store. It makes the customer feel as if he or she is having a shopping experience and not just a generic shopping trip. Dunham’s has relatively lower ceilings, bright white lights that hurt the eyes and it’s organizational scheme is not as clear. Dunham’s has a cheaper feel to its interior which seems appropriate because they claim to have lower prices. But the only marginally cheaper prices do not make up for its dramatically cheaper interior. Also, it is their actual merchandise that, despite both being the same type of store, varies greatly. Dunham’s gun section is far superior to Dick’s because of their larger selection of styles of guns. Dick’s doesn’t carry any handguns or semi-automatic weapons whereas Dunham’s sells a variety of each. Dunham’s also has better camping and kayak sections giving it a more outdoor theme. Dick’s on the other hand is better in all other sections such as clothing, golf, team sports, weightlifting, and many others. Both stores are good in their own ways. Overall, Dunham’s has a wider variety of outdoor supplies whereas Dick’s has better sporting sections. But, as all things do, they both have their ups and downs, and it’s up to the customer decide which one he or she likes best. HTML Comment Box is loading comments...
