Key Club hosts sports equipment driveBY HAILEE WHITFIELD ON OCTOBER 18, 2013
The adaptive P.E classes need sports equipment for their kids more than ever, so with the help of Key Club, they’re hoping to collect all they can.
The members of the Key Club noticed that there was a problem with P.E. classes not having enough equipment for the Adaptive P.E. class, so Key Club has decided to hold a sports equipment drive to collect used sports equipment so the kids can use them. The sports drive will help P.E. classes that assist special needs children, and they will be able to use the equipment that is collected in the drive. “Alice Reed is the President of Key Club, and it was the combination of her and some other people that came up with the idea of collecting sporting equipment for the adaptive P.E. classes,” Key Club Advisor Clay Medlin said. “Key Club is collecting equipment just for Rose but the adaptive P.E. program serves twenty seven different schools.” The P.E. classes realized they didn't have any goal posts or basketballs the kids size to play any games or teach lessons and would like to try and collect as much as they can for the kids through Key Club. The Key Club has decided to make this their service project since they normally have one monthly. The drive started October first and it will end on November first, and they are going to try to include homecoming with it. In the past homecoming has never had anything to do with the community, but this year they are trying to give back to the people. A unit is being built in construction teacher Joey Joyner’s room that will be moved and the equipment will be store in. and they are going to try to fill the unit as much as they can with things from tennis balls to bicycles. One thing that they would like to acquire would be treadmills that the students would use for exercises. “We are building a building for the adaptive P.E. classes so they can store the equipment,” Joyner said. “We’re trying to include as many classes as we can to help and we have about five classes helping so far, even a girl in the Interior Design has designed a shelving system for the inside. It’s a great project for construction and carpentry to do and three of my personal classes are included in it and I think they are actually understanding what it’s for.” Refrigerator boxes have been put in Key Club advisor Clay Medlins room, student services and other places around the school where people can bring in and donate any used equipment they do not use. Joyner explained how much he enjoyed helping with this project and understands how important it is. “It’s a little personal for me too because my son has Autism here at Rose,” Joyner said. “I want others to realize how important it is too.” The Key Club noticed that sports equipment is not recognized as greatly needed for the EC kids but they would like to try and collect as much as possible. During the month of October the Key Club asks students to look for any sports equipment that they do not use around their house that can be used for sports and bring it into the storage unit or any of the donation boxes around school.
