Rose theater goes 'old' schoolBY MCKENNA NELSON ON DECEMBER 19, 2013
The Rampant Theatrical Company performed “Those Crazy Ladies in the House on the Corner” by Tim Kelly on Dec. 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 in the drama room.
Theater Arts teacher Monica Edwards has been teaching theater classes at Rose for sixteen years. “About seven years ago, this play was performed with students directing it, so I wanted to do it again and direct it since I like this play so much,” Edwards said. “I decided last year that I wanted to do it again.” As the preparation began at the beginning of September, many students were given leadership roles. Senior Sterling-Wolf Ayers was named the stage manager for this play, which means that he built the set. Other students in the theater tech class helped Ayers with the task. “Our main challenge was figuring out how to fit everything on the stage,” Ayers said. “The stage is very small so it was definitely a challenge.” However, the Rampant Theatrical Company is performing “Grease, The Musical” in the spring of 2014, so the PAC stage will be used. This will make the set bigger and make it easier to fit all the props on stage. For this production, senior Ivy Jarman played Dora, the oldest of the three sisters. “The three sisters speak at the same time, so it was difficult to get the timing down,” Jarman said. The actors and actresses rehearsed after school, during SMART Block and during theater class. “We did a lot of rehearsing during school, but we had to work a lot on our own to learn our lines,” Jarman said. “I will definitely practice my lines more for the next play.” Edwards assigned different students to be in charge of different aspects of the play. This is how Ayers was named stage manager. Edwards said things got difficult when she put students in charge of other students, but she managed to make it work. “It makes it harder when the students in charge and the students with less responsibility do not have mutual respect,” Edwards said. “This is something I have been trying to teach because knowing how to handle responsibility will help these students a lot in the real world.” Ayers, Edwards and Jarman were all pleased with how the play went. Edwards said she hopes these productions will have a lasting effect on the students. “My favorite part about being a theater teacher is giving the students a memorable experience that they will remember for years to come,” Edwards said.
